The History of the Maharaja Train
Palace On Wheels train tour was launched in 1984 ,using the original saloons used by Indian Royalty,before 1950's. It comprised of personal coaches of the erstwhile rulers of the princely states of Gujarat and Rajputana, the Viceroy of British India and the Nizam of Hyderabad.These saloons can now be viewed at Rail Museum in New Delhi.
The saloons being used in present Palace on Wheels train were designed & introduced in 1996,which are richly furnished in traditional Rajasthani style & create the aura of a bygone era The Palace On Wheels is a joint venture between Rajasthan Tourism & Indian Railways

The Train
Both Maharaja trains, exhibits a perfect blend of a quaint and traditional ambience and all the modern amenities. It is completely self-sufficient and fully air-conditioned. Each Passenger Coaches/Saloons has four Coupes/Cabins each having twin beds & attached toilets with showers. On board there is a well stocked bar, two lovely restaurants and an aryuvedic spa.
