The Journey
A week on board the Palace on Wheels does not only provide an experience of the lifestyles of the India royalty. The trip also offers an opportunity to explore the romance of rustic Rajasthan and the magic of the magnificent Indian monuments.
Rajasthan is probably the most intriguing state in India, with a history replete with tales of glory, valor, sacrifice, self-respect and chivalry. Battles and bloodshed were always a part of the momentous past of Rajasthan. However, in the times of peace, forts and palaces were built whose splendor is unparalleled in the world. The Royal Train stops for local tours at all the destinations of great historical significance.
The History of the Maharaja Train
The train was originally intended for the former Indian royalty. It comprised of personal coaches of the erstwhile rulers of the princely states of Gujarat and Rajputana, the Viceroy of British India and the Nizam of Hyderabad.
After independence, the train was cast aside and more or less forgotten. In the early 1980s this ignored and abandoned train was reconsidered. The Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation, together with the Indian Railways proposed a special heritage tourist train.

The Train
The train exhibits a perfect blend of a quaint and traditional ambience and all the modern amenities. It is completely self-sufficient and fully air-conditioned. There are fourteen Passenger Coaches/Saloons With four Coupes/Cabins each having twin beds & attached showers. On board there is a well stocked bar, two lovely restaurants and the provision for indoor games. There is a charming souvenir shop in the lounge. Here one can pick up gift items that have the insignia of the Palace on Wheels. Recent additions include a mini gym & herbal beauty parlour.
The Epitome of Luxury, Style and Grandeur
The stay on board is marked with exuberance and extravagance. The interiors are decorated tastefully, maintaining the royal ambience. Every fraction of the train speaks of Rajasthan's heritage of art and craftsmanship. The paintings, carved furniture and elegant handicrafts recreate the royal atmosphere of yore. The hospitality is excellent. Every Coach has a Saloon Steward & one attendant to cater to all needs of the tourists,round the clock.
