Varanasi, also called Banaras or Kashi is situated in Uttar Pradesh, on the banks of the sacred River Ganga or Ganges.

According to Hindu beliefs, taking a dip in the holy waters of the Ganges River cleanses a person of his/her sins and breaks the cycle of birth and death, thus providing spiritual enlightenment. A deeply respected and highly regarded Hindu and Jain pilgrimage site, Varanasi is known as the Oldest Living City in the world and the Religious Capital of India.

The city of Varanasi is perhaps best known for its 80+ Ghats or riverfront steps where devotees perform different types of religious ceremonies. Some famous Ghats in Varanasi include Manikarnika Ghat, Assi Ghat, Munshi Ghat, Kedar Ghat, and Ram Ghat, etc.

The Ganga Aarti, which is performed at dusk every day, is the most beautiful, memorable and humbling experience you will have in Varanasi.

Varanasi is also a centre for education and culture, trade, arts, and crafts as well as dance and music. Asia’s biggest and most reputed University, the Benaras Hindu University is located here.
