Overlooking The Ancient Khajuraho Temples

Numerous domestic and international tourists visit the ancient city of Khajuraho every year to witness the beauty, architectural glory and exemplary craftsmanship of its 25 stunning Hindu and Jain temples.

Based on their location, these temples are classified into Eastern, Western and Southern temples and are famous for their intricate sculptures and stone carvings that display a wide variety of themes including royalty, meditation, spirituality and erotic art, etc.

A proud recipient of the prestigious title of UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 for the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, Khajuraho gets its name from ‘Khajur’ or ‘Date Palm Tree’.

The temples of Khajuraho can be dated back to 950 – 1050 AD. They were built during the reign of the Chandela dynasty over approximately 100 years. These temples are spread across an area of about 20 sqr km.

Though over 80 temples were originally built, only about 25 remain intact.

LAKSHMANA TEMPLE – Dedicated to Vaikuntha-Vishnu (Lord Vishnu), this is one of the most well-preserved Hindu temples of Khajuraho that took almost twenty years to complete. The unique facet of the Lakshmana Temple is its main chamber that is shaped like a beautiful chariot.

From the moment you reach its entrance till the time you step inside and explore its many facets, you will be spellbound by the temple’s impressive architecture, fascinating carvings of Hindu deities as well as the large sculpture of Lord Vishnu.

KANDARIYA MAHADEV TEMPLE – Counted amongst the largest of Khajuraho temples, the Kandariya Mahadev Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has a towering height of over 30 metres. It showcases the Chandela architecture style and stands out for its beautiful sculptures and statues that add up to about 872.

DEVI JAGDAMBA TEMPLE – Designed in three parts or three bands, the Devi Jagdamba Temple (Jagdambika Temple) is a Hindu temple that is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. It contains intricate carvings of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, and a beautiful idol of Goddess Jagdamba.

PARSVANATH TEMPLE – This is the largest Jain temple in Khajuraho. One look at it and you will realize that the temple has been very well preserved. Its highlights include the various eye-catching carvings, sculptures and its excellent construction.

CHITRAGUPT TEMPLE – Dedicated to Surya, the Sun-god, this temple is perhaps best known for its scenes from hunting, elephant fights and excellent carvings of Apsaras.
